Author’s Ice Cream
An ice cream parlor, four weeks over the turn of 2024. Three rounds were in the fee. The fourth wasn't. That's the story.
What a project costs
01. Two boards, one funnel
It started on a broad board, Ice Creamery, 340 pins: every parlor worth a look. Not this shop, just what one can be.
Then Author’s Ice Cream, 55 pins: only what survived. Pinterest’s own topic line reads “paper mache pendant lighting”. It had come down to the lights.
Two boards are worth the hour. On the broad one a client says no cheaply. Skip it and the dislike turns up in round three, where it's expensive.
02. Four rounds, not three
Most projects settle in three: an initial look, then two rounds of changes. That's what the fixed fee covers.
This one went to four.

Sixty three frames of drafts before one finished rendering, and two different ways past the fee.
A second option is extra work at the same stage. Rounds one and two were each shown two ways. One is in the fee, the other is quoted.
An extra round is the same work again, later. Round four came a day after three: nineteen finished frames, things to move. Real request, never in the fee.
Both were quoted before they were drawn. That's what matters.
03. Every round, in order

Watch the counter. It starts straight, gains fluting, turns into an L, goes green late. None of that shows in a finished rendering.
04. Quick renders, not finals
Not the finished renderings. Quick renders run on the drafts to check the light. Minutes each, not hours.
Worth showing because the scheme was still moving: rattan pendants, a terrazzo apron, cane shelving. Some survived.

Compare the counter with section 08. The terrazzo is gone and the rattan became glass. Neither was an accident.
05. What a paid round actually buys
Not a better designer. The same one, for longer.
A fixed fee bets a project resolves in known work. Most do in two rounds. When one doesn't, we say so and quote the extra, not take it from someone else’s project.
Nobody was penalized for changing their mind. They were told the cost first.
06. The drawings
Five sheets, not five pictures. Plans at a quarter inch, schedules, a plumbing riser, a wall detail. Then nine sections and every piece of joinery at half inch.
Look at what's named. The dipping cabinet is a Nelson 16DIPHV-RB, not "ice cream freezer". A joiner can price this. That's a drawing, not a picture of one.
Every set of ours opens the same way: do not scale drawings, written dimensions govern.
07. The shopping list
Three pages: item, store, link, price, notes, image. Chair 2 Modern at $574.00. Paint by Benjamin Moore, by name.
The notes are where the work shows. One reads paint pink with the paint that has been specified. Wrong color, sent back.

08. Delivered
A green fluted counter under a forest of globe pendants, three lit arches, fluted timber against exposed steel. Pink cane chairs, because ice cream is allowed to be cheerful.
The ceiling was left as found, dark and industrial, with every pendant dropping through it. Covering it would cost money and lose the height.
